Out and About in Paris

Kate and were roaming in Paris on Monday and Tuesday and have random pictures.  We've been back to Bon Marché for some odds and ends.  We did find real baking powder there on the US shelves and debated about getting it.  But they didn't have US brown sugar and still the flour is too fine here so we decided to wait until we are back in Utah before we make more cookies.
These are pictures from the Bon Marché Department Store.  It is so pretty and elegant--Kate and I love the escalators and the displays.

Coca-Cola is running the same advertisements here as in the US with names on the Coke bottles (in France, you ask for un Coca, not a Coke, and un Coca Light if you want diet).  Here is one of the ads in the subway.

Kate and I liked this Art Nouveau Métro entrance on the rue de Rivoli.  It is also advertising the new attraction at Disneyland Paris based on the movie Ratatouille.  There are signs all over Paris for this.

And here is Kelly walking by the boulangerie on our street--the one we call the white bakery.

Tuesday I wanted to see the Passage Jouffroy and the Passage Panorama.  They were built in the mid 19th century as a covered pedestrian walkway with shops and cafés. The passages are covered with a canopy of metal and glass.

The Passage Jouffroy is the first Parisian Passage covered with iron and glass-a technical achievement at the time.  You might call it the first indoor shopping mall.

The Passage Panorama had a lot of stamp and coin collecting shops.

The passages were pretty cool, but the stores did not interest us much.  They seemed touristy and over-priced (but then Paris is over-priced).  The Passage Jouffroy is right next to the Musée Grevin--the wax museum.  Kate and I think wax museums are creepy so we did not venture in.  There was a cute hotel at the end of the Passage Jouffroy.

We decided to walk down towards rue de Rivoli to find another covered passage--Galerie Vivienne.  We walked past many money changers and banks and then it dawned on me we were by the old Bourse--the stock exchange.

The Bourse
We found the entrance to the Galerie Vivienne.  Everything there was beautiful with several gorgeous stores.  Kate and I liked it much better than the Passage Jouffroy.  But of course we couldn't afford anything.  It looked like a nice place to sit at a café.

Leaving Galerie Vivienne
As we left the Galerie Vivenne, we kept walking south toward rue de Rivoli and through the Jardin de Palais Royal.  It is just north of the Louvre and was so calm and quiet.  There were double rows of lime trees and beautiful dahlias and roses.

From there we turned onto rue St. Honoré, another shopping street Kate likes.  We caught a peek of the Ferris Wheel in the Tuileries Gardens.

Kate talked me into walking down to rue de Rivioli to see if the workers had finished the renovations at Angelina.  Kate was excited to see they had so we took a break from all the walking and ordered a pot of hot chocolate.

That gave us some energy to do a little more shopping before calling it a day.  Kate and I enjoyed wandering Paris together and seeing new things.
More to come about our adventure today to Disneyland Paris and our last visitor arrives tomorrow morning.
